For anyone interested here is what makes this blog tick, I am not a Wordpress expert and following a lot of testing, installing/de-installing many plugins, widgets and themes I settled on the look and functionality you can now see.
While configuring this blog I saw functionality on other blogs that I wanted to use but was unable to easily identify which plugins I needed. With that in mind, if there is anything you see and like on the blog it should be listed together with a link to the developer/source. All the components used are Open and freely available.

Easy Twitter Links – creates twitter links automatically when a #tagname or @username appears in a blog post or comments
WP to Twitter – automatically tweets new posts using @stuartconey
Topsy Retweet Button – the tweet/retweet button at the start of each post
WPtouch iPhone Theme – provides an alternative Wordpress theme for iPhone and Google Android access
SexyBookmarks – the nice popup list of social networking sites at the bottom of each post
Gravatar Signup Encouragement – displays users gravatar in comments or offers option to create gravatar
Subscribe To “Double-Opt-In” Comments – provides email notification service when new comments are posted
Special Text Boxes – used for inserting none fixed width programming code into using the custom settings
Revision Delete – manages post and page revisions which are created each time a post is edited and changed
Backupify for Wordpress – agent used by Backupify web service for backing up Wordpress Blogs
